Teacher Sara Ozbun opened the service.

Andrea Colyer led worship.

At the end of worship, Apostle Susan Powers shared the following Word from the Lord:

“I will be with you.  In seasons of sorrow and seasons of laughter, I am with you,” says the Lord.  “Let Me lead you to the place where you’ll find healing and wholeness and rest for your weary souls.  For the battle has been great - but the victory has been secured.  You are not without a shepherd.  You are not on your own.  For I am with you.  I hold you by your right hand, now and forever.  Don’t lose heart.  Don’t be afraid.  I am with you.  I AM with you.”

Bible Story: God Speaks to Samuel

Bible Verse: Philippians 4:6

Message: Pastor Jeff Spangler

“Building Expectation - Does That Make Sense?”

John 14:29

I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.

We like to make our own decisions about what we think should happen…how did that work out for Judas?  And before you judge Judas…Judas was pushing Jesus to be what he wanted Him to be, out of season.  Sometimes we double down on that, and Scripture tells us the results of that: in Judas’s case, an evil spirit entered him.

When we make false expectations, we open ourselves up to the justification of why we are where we are.  We make choices that justify our behaviors and open ourselves up to the urgency of the world.

We are almost to the last month of the spiritual year, and we are headed into the season of Passover.   On the Hebraic calendar, it’s the time of year when the farmers start to make plans.

For us as well - it’s a time to look at our circle and say “what would it be this year?”  We want to build expectations wisely, not foolishly.

Sometimes we hesitate, because when we agree with God, our lives are going to change.  He is more committed to our change than we are  Our resolve wavers - but He never wavers

He could have just made us do things - but He gave us will, and a choice.  He wants US to build expectations.

Last week: what is the difference between wise and foolish?  What makes the difference?  If we want to be in the wise and not the foolish, what does that mean?

Today: “Building Expectation - Does That Make Sense?”

God said to Pastor Jeff: “Does that make sense?”  Which is something Pastor says a lot!

Pastor responded “yeah, that makes sense.”  MAN is that the wrong thing to say to God!  It’s not the way you think it is!

In recent weeks we have had:

Parable of  the builders: wise and foolish

Parable of the 10 virgins: wise and foolish

Luke 24:13-32

3 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

How many of us have been on the journey with Him and Jesus shows up differently than we think He will?  How many of us think “this isn’t where I thought I would be”?  And then Jesus shows up, and we don’t recognize Him.

  1. As they walked along, they said “this doesn’t make sense.”

Everything they thought would happen, everything they had hoped for…”this doesn’t make sense!”

Have you looked at the world around you and thought “this doesn’t make sense”?

It’s in those moments Jesus shows up and asks, “Hey, does that make sense?”

Jesus says to build right expectations - because He has told us now before it happens so that you will believe…this must mean you don’t believe now.  (Yikes!)

  1. Jesus’s response: (Lord forgive me for telling you about you) - He doesn’t rebuke them, but He does say something pretty strong: how foolish are you?

Some language background:

First, remember that Luke’s Gospel is written in Greek.

Second, over 35 times in the Scriptures uses the word “foolish.”  We interpret that in our culture and lingo as “stupid.”  Is that what Jesus meant?

In the language, this word “foolish” can mean 7 or 8 different things:  Dull, ignorant, senseless, lacking foresight, empty headed, lacking understanding…let’s zone in on the last thing.

Lacking understanding.

For all these different uses and meaning of foolish…do you know how many different interpretations of wise there are?  ONE.

The one who hears and does - that’s what wisdom means.  Let those who have ears to hear, let them hear…AND DO.

We need to LISTEN and then DO.  THAT’S wise.

But the Greek work here is “moros.”

“How moros are you?”

Moros - root word of moron, which again, to us, means stupid.  But it actually means “spiritually blind or lacking foresight.”  “You are a moron” actually means “you are lacking foresight.”  The world has taken the Word and turned it into something else.

It actually means lacking spiritual awareness.  Jesus was saying “How spiritually blind are you?”

Back to Matthew 7 and the story of the builders.  The word for wise: khakhima. This is a Hebrew word that means “he who hears and does.”  If you don’t understand what someone wants from you, you don’t do it.  But he who has ears to hear and then does - he is wise.  Ignorance is unknowing, but being stupid is unknowing and no trying to  find out.

So Jesus wasn’t saying what we think He said.  He was saying “oh, how they lack understanding…”

God is listening to what you’re doing in your family and listening to what you’re doing and saying “tell me more.”  He wants to know what you think!  He wants to hear more about the solution and not the problem.  “TELL ME MORE,” God says. It’s a test!  “Tell me more about what you know about Jesus!”  He wants to know what you have understood!

The builder who was wise, he had ears to hear and did. He built on the rock.  He heard and he was a doer.  He’s blessed.

The other guy was a hearer but not a doer.  He didn’t apply understanding.

The Ten Virgins were also called wise and foolish.  They weren’t stupid.  They lacked understanding.

You have to have YOUR oil - what is it you need to light the world for Jesus Christ?  What do you really believe and know?

God is telling us right now so that when it happens we believe…John 14:29:   have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.

God’s alive, and He is listening, and we don’t want to be telling Him about Him - we want to be hearers of the Word and then DO what it says.

Knowledge is learning something.

INSERTED: Here are Pastor’s notes about words and their meanings regarding wise and foolish…

Hebrew words and their connotations:

Ish Nevon: understanding/prudent

Ish Kesil: obstinate or dull

Nabhal: Senseless

Evil: Lacks understanding

Aramaic words and their connotations:

Sakia: senseless or ignorant

Raca: empty headed

These are the same root for the story of the ten virgins in Matthew 25.

Lots of words…He talks to YOU in the language YOU need.  HE KNOWS YOU.

Knowledge is gaining new information.  The shift to doing something with it is to gain understanding.   THAT’S how you build right expectations.  That’s how you apply the Word God gives you.

WE are those on the Road to Emmaus.  WE are those being sent to tell the gospel of Jesus Christ, even as we say “this doesn’t make sense.”  How are THEY going to be different if YOU don’t believe?  Seek understanding!  Seek…with all your heart.

How did you write “sense”?  What does “sense” refer to?

Touch.

Sight.

Taste.

Smell.

Hear.

Does it make sense?  The five sense that we have originate from our head.  Sometimes we think we hear or see a thing, and it doesn’t make sense…so our mind fills in what we think we sensed.

Here’s the key to building good expectation: shifting your sense from your head to your heart.

A man in the Spirit can SEE in the Spirit.

He can HEAR in the Spirit.

He can TASTE in the Spirit.

SMELL in the Spirit.

TOUCH in the Spirit.

When Jesus said “does that make sense?” He meant was “Jeff, are you using your physical senses or your spiritual senses to discern what is going on in this season?”

Most of the time we jump to our physical senses.

“I heard…”

“Common sense…”

“I read that…”

You’re going to Emmaus, but not with understanding.

If you think you don’t hear God speak, speak the Word out loud.  And then hear what HE is saying - he who hears with his heart and uses the common truth in his heart to measure what he just heard.

When Apostle Sue had the Word this morning in worship and spoke it, Pastor Jeff heard it in his HEART.

You can’t wait for someone else to do that for you!  You have to hear it with YOUR heart!

Building expectation - does that make sense?

Building expectation - stop using your head and use your heart.  In other words: DISCERNMENT.

Building strong expectations relies on DISCERNMENT.

Discernment - to detect with your sense or detect with your spirit; to know or come to recognize the difference between the truth and a lie

You will CHOOSE what you love, what you say, what you do.  You’re not a victim.  Build a good expectation and have discernment

“Dear people - who will stand in the gap for Me?”

Who will move out of knowledge and seek understanding for Jesus Chtist?  Who will build proper expectations?

He has made you wonderfully. If you just quiet down enough, you will discover He has placed the gift of discernment within you.

He’s giving you solutions - not more problems!

There are goals and dreams He wants to release FROM YOU.

  1. At the table with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

He sat down at the table with them.  He joined with them.  When is the last time you sat down at the table with them?  See where they are at and meet them THERE.  He said - “YOU GO.”  It’s not about you!

What did He give them?  Just bread.

Be prepared to meet them at the table. Every morning pray for it…remember that vision of the daily bread, Jesus standing there with the apron, covered in flour? Saying: “This is your daily bread.”  And it’s always more than enough, because it’s His expectation that you take it to others.  How many times do we run out of the house and not take it?

He gave you what you need - and then He wants you to take it to THEM.

When did they see that it was Him?  It was in the GIVING that their eyes were opened.

“Their eyes were open” - physical eyes?  No, spiritual eyes, and their eyes will not open until you give them the bread of life.  Stop making it about YOU - that doesn’t make sense!

Give them fresh bread, and maybe it’s in that moment that they will see Jesus - IN YOU

32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Service ended with a time of personal reflection with the Lord.
